1958 Chevrolet Impala ‘Tri-Power’ Convertible Showcases One-Year Design and V8 Power

A striking example of Chevrolet’s most distinctive postwar design is headed to auction as a fully restored 1958 Chevrolet Impala ‘Tri-Power’ Convertible prepares to cross the block at the upcoming Henderson Collector Motor Series Auction, held May 3, 2025, at the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum.

Built during a single-year production run, the 1958 Impala Convertible was a stylistic and mechanical leap forward for Chevrolet. This particular car, finished in factory-correct Onyx Black with a matching black soft top, represents the top of the line for that model year. It has undergone a complete nut-and-bolt restoration and retains its rare factory code 900AL trim, pairing jet-black paint with the tri-tone “Luxury Lounge” interior—an upscale treatment that introduced buyers to mid-century American automotive luxury at a relatively affordable price.

Under the hood lies the highly sought-after “Tri-Power” 348-cubic-inch V8 engine equipped with three two-barrel carburetors. Paired with the then-new Turboglide automatic transmission, the powertrain delivered 280 horsepower and a healthy dose of torque. This combination marked Chevrolet’s growing focus on performance, even in its most stylish convertible offerings.

The Impala’s design reflected what Chevrolet designers dubbed the “Sculpturamic” look. A lower, wider body featured sweeping lines, quad headlights, and a gullwing rear end. Additional exterior details include spinner hubcaps, wide whitewall tires, proper fender skirts, and a rare factory continental kit—finishing touches that define the era’s flamboyant styling.

Modern mechanical upgrades include a 12-volt alternator system and tilt steering for improved reliability and comfort. Inside, the cabin is outfitted with power steering, power brakes, and an original-style AM radio.

As the final evolution of Harley Earl’s styling legacy under Chevrolet’s Clare MacKichan, the 1958 Impala stands as an American icon. This professionally restored convertible offers collectors a rare opportunity to acquire one of the most celebrated designs of the era, presented in show-ready condition and powered by one of the most desirable engine options available.
