1962 Corvair Monza Spyder and 1966 Amphicar 770 to Headline Freije & Freije Fall Big Boy Toy Auction

Two unusual classics with very different stories will cross the block at no reserve during Freije & Freije Auctioneers’ Fall Big Boy Toy Auction on September 26.

The first is a 1962 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spyder, a model that helped usher in the era of turbocharging for American cars. Finished in red and paired with a four-speed manual transmission, this convertible is powered by a 150-horsepower engine that distinguished the Spyder from the base Corvair lineup. What makes this lot even more significant is that all proceeds will benefit Childplace, a nonprofit organization in Jeffersonville, Indiana. The odometer shows just over 8,000 miles, and the car offers bidders the chance to acquire an early piece of turbocharged American engineering while supporting a charitable cause.

Joining it on the auction floor is one of the most unusual vehicles ever produced, the 1966 Amphicar 770. Built in West Germany by Industrie-Werke Karlsruhe, the Amphicar was designed to operate both on land and in water, making it the only mass-produced civilian amphibious car of its kind. Powered by an inline four-cylinder engine and four-speed manual transmission, the model features unique gearing for aquatic travel, with one forward and one reverse gear for maneuvering on the water. This particular example, finished in red, was water-tested as recently as August 2025 and is one of just 3,878 Amphicars ever produced. Its odometer shows 5,391 miles.

Both cars are consigned to cross the block on Day Two of the sale in Ring Two, with bidding opening at just $1. No reserve status ensures both the Corvair and Amphicar will find new owners. For enthusiasts, these lots present a rare mix of collectible heritage, novelty, and in the case of the Corvair, the chance to contribute to a worthy cause.
