One of the most coveted early Mustangs, a 1965 Ford Mustang GT K-Code Convertible with a dealer-installed Cobra kit, will be offered at the upcoming Saratoga Motorcar Auction.

The K-Code Mustangs, distinguished by their high-performance 289-cubic-inch V8 engines, represented Ford’s earliest serious foray into pony car performance. Rated at 271 horsepower in stock form, the K-Code carried unique restrictions from the factory, including mandatory four-speed manual transmissions and shortened warranties. They quickly became the foundation for Carroll Shelby’s legendary GT350s, cementing their place in Ford performance history.

This particular example, chassis 5F08K777151, retains its numbers-matching drivetrain but was upgraded at the dealer with the rare Cobra kit. The package added tri-power carburetors, an aluminum intake, valve covers, and breather, boosting output to 314 horsepower. Finished in Wimbledon White with a red deluxe pony interior, the convertible also features a power-operated top.

Equipped with the GT package, Rally-Pac gauges, disc brakes, sway bar, and an AM radio with reverb, the Mustang carries period upgrades that enhance both performance and collectability. The current owner notes that stainless exhaust and brake linings were added, and many new-old-stock parts were used in a restoration process that took more than 2,000 hours to complete.

The car has been restored to Mustang Club of America judging standards and is listed in the HiPo Registry, making it an especially documented and desirable K-Code example.

With fewer K-Code Mustangs surviving in such original and highly-optioned condition, this convertible represents an important piece of Ford’s pony car legacy. For collectors, it is not just a first-generation Mustang but a direct link to the origins of Ford’s performance lineage.
