A historic and exceptionally rare 1966 Ford GT40 MkI Road Car, chassis P/1034, is set to turn heads at Mecum’s Kissimmee 2025 auction on January 18th. As the first road car delivered to a private customer and one of only 31 MkI road cars ever produced, this GT40 represents a significant chapter in Ford’s motorsport history.
Finished in its original Pine Green with added silver stripes, this GT40 boasts a storied past. Initially delivered on March 17, 1966, to James Fielding, chairman of Heenan & Froude—Ford’s dynamometer supplier—it was handed over by none other than racing legend Jackie Stewart. Fielding kept the car for over five years before selling it to neighbor Paul Weldon in exchange for a Rolls-Royce.
Weldon raced the GT40 extensively across the UK during the 1970s, earning accolades like a concours victory at Brands Hatch and participation in the Le Mans pre-race parade. Under subsequent owners, the car gained further fame, racing in Australia, the Adelaide Grand Prix Support Race, and Europe, where it claimed victory at the Stuttgart Grand Prix in 1999.
This iconic GT40 retains many original components, including its tub, ZF 5-speed transaxle, and body panels, which were refitted in 2019. Power comes from a Weber-equipped Ford 289 CI V8 engine, dyno-tested at 335 horsepower, and an additional January 1966-dated engine accompanies the car.
Fully restored to its original specifications, P/1034 has dazzled on the concours circuit, earning accolades at Pebble Beach and Salon Privé. Eligible for prestigious historic races like Goodwood Revival and Le Mans Classic, this GT40 offers a rare opportunity for collectors to own a piece of automotive and motorsport history.
