In the world of classic American muscle cars, few vehicles hold as much significance as the 1967 Pontiac Firebird Convertible, VIN 223677U100005. This standout piece of automotive history is believed to be the first Firebird produced with the legendary 400 CI V-8 engine paired to a 3-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission. Its exceptional provenance and meticulous restoration set it apart, making it one of the most noteworthy Firebirds to cross the auction block.

Produced in the third week of December 1966, this Firebird Convertible, now finished in Tyrol Blue, was initially invoiced to Pontiac Engineering—a fact confirmed by its billing history and PHS documentation. Interestingly, the car originally left the factory in primer, destined for engineering modifications. Although invoiced in Starlight Black (code A2), it was repainted in its current striking Tyrol Blue shade while under Pontiac’s engineering care.

Its restoration, completed in 2022, earned the car Concours Gold honors at both the 2022 Trans Am Nationals in Dayton, Ohio, and the 2023 Pontiac Oakland Club International (POCI) Convention in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. These accolades reflect not just its rarity but the painstaking attention to detail throughout its restoration process.

The Firebird is powered by its matching-numbers drivetrain, including a YT block 400 CI V-8 engine with correct components like the carburetor, alternator, and distributor. Enhancements include a correct-style exhaust system, re-cored radiator with a fan shroud, and reproduction California A.I.R. air cleaner housings. A 3-speed Hydra-Matic transmission ensures smooth operation, with power steering and front disc brakes completing the driving experience.

The body restoration features new sheet metal—a one-piece floor pan, tail panel, outer wheel houses, quarter panels, and door skins—ensuring a structurally sound and visually stunning result. Complementing the exterior is a power-operated black convertible top and a restored Code 255 blue bucket seat interior with a folding rear seat. Luxury options include power windows, a tilt steering column, and an updated correct-style hood tachometer.

Adding further historical weight, this Firebird holds the distinction of being the first V-8 Firebird optioned with an 8-track stereo—a groundbreaking feature for its time. The stereo has been fully restored, showcasing Pontiac’s forward-thinking approach to integrating technology with performance. Additional period-correct details include Rally II wheels with E70x14 redline tires, updated date-coded glass, and replated chrome bumpers, all contributing to the car’s award-winning authenticity.

As a pioneering example of Pontiac’s first-generation Firebird, VIN 5 is not only a historically significant model but a testament to the ingenuity and spirit of 1960s American muscle cars. Its rarity, outstanding restoration, and documented legacy make it an extraordinary opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts alike. For the next proud owner, this Firebird Convertible represents far more than just a car—it’s a rolling piece of Pontiac history.
