In an unprecedented auction result, a 1969 Dodge HEMI Charger Daytona shattered records at the 2024 Mecum Monterey event, selling for an astounding $3.3 million. This sale not only reclaims the title for the most expensive 1969 Charger Daytona ever auctioned but also sets a new benchmark for “winged warriors” worldwide, becoming the first to surpass both the $2-million and $3-million marks.

The HEMI Daytona, draped in its rare F8 Dark Green hue, is no ordinary classic car. Its allure stems from a combination of factors that make it a true gem in the muscle car world. Of the 503 Charger Daytonas produced in 1969 to meet NASCAR homologation requirements, only 70 were equipped with the formidable 426-cubic-inch (7.0-liter) HEMI V8 engine. Of these, a mere 22 units were paired with the coveted four-speed manual transmission. This particular Daytona, with its numbers-matching drivetrain, stands out as one of the rarest of the rare.

However, rarity alone does not account for its record-setting price. This Daytona is a one-of-one example, the only car to feature a C6G green vinyl interior paired with the F8 Dark Green exterior. Its status as the most highly optioned HEMI Daytona ever produced further elevates its desirability. The original owner spared no expense, ordering an extensive list of options including the 4.10 Super Track Pak, P31 power windows, N51 Max Cooling Package, A01 Light Package, color-matched stamped wheels, and an array of premium interior features such as the N85 Tic-Toc-Tach, G11 All-Tinted glass, S81 woodgrain steering wheel, C62 six-way adjustable driver’s seat, and C55 headrest bucket seats.

This auction marks a significant moment in the collector car market, highlighting the increasing value and appreciation of highly original and rare American muscle cars. The green Daytona’s sale price more than doubles the previous record of $1.43 million set in January 2023, solidifying its status as a museum-grade classic.

The Daytona wasn’t the only high-profile car to cross the auction block during the event. It was accompanied by other significant classics from The Nevada Collection, including a 1970 Plymouth HEMI ‘Cuda Convertible, which fetched $2 million, and a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing, which sold for $1.7 million. Despite these impressive figures, the Daytona was eclipsed only by a 1969 Ford GT40 Lightweight, which became the most expensive car at the event, selling for $7.86 million.

This sale is a testament to the enduring appeal of the Dodge Charger Daytona and its place in automotive history. As the most expensive “winged warrior” ever sold, this car is a symbol of the golden era of American muscle and a prized possession for any serious collector.
