1972 Pontiac LeMans GTO 455 H.O. to Headline Indy Fall Auction

A rare slice of Pontiac muscle car history is set to take center stage at the Fall Big Boy Toy Auction, presented by Freije & Freije Auctioneers. Scheduled for September 26–27 in Indianapolis, the sale will feature a 1972 Pontiac LeMans GTO that stands out as one of the rarest of its kind.

Listed as INDY-1, this GTO is powered by the 455 H.O. V-8 engine paired with a four-speed Muncie manual transmission—a factory combination reportedly produced in just three examples for 1972. The auction listing notes the car is accompanied by its build sheet and Pontiac Historical Services (PHS) documents, verifying its authenticity.

Finished in Cardinal Red with a contrasting white vinyl bucket-seat interior, the GTO carries period-correct features including a factory tachometer, console, Hurst shifter, and Ram-Air hood. Its stance is completed by five-spoke alloy wheels capped with PMD center caps, giving the car both factory originality and road-ready appeal.

The odometer shows just over 82,000 miles, a figure consistent with a well-preserved example of a muscle-era survivor. Equipped with air conditioning and power steering, the car blends performance with usability, making it equally suited for collection display or weekend driving.

The 1972 model year marked a transitional period for Pontiac, as stricter emissions standards and insurance surcharges began to curb muscle car production. That makes this GTO—with its top-tier H.O. powerplant and four-speed setup—an exceptionally rare survivor of the era.

For enthusiasts and collectors, the offering represents a chance to secure a documented, low-production GTO that embodies both Pontiac’s engineering heritage and the peak of early-1970s American muscle.
