One of the most coveted icons of Porsche’s air-cooled legacy—the 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Touring—is set to cross the block at RM Sotheby’s this April in a headline-grabbing sealed drop event. Estimated to fetch between £350,000 and £450,000, this particular RS is not only one of just 117 factory-built right-hand-drive Tourings, but also the only example delivered new to Hong Kong finished in the striking combination of black with red Carrera graphics.
Originally delivered in June 1973, this RS Touring was a standout from day one. Factory options included power windows, an electric sunroof, sport seats, a limited-slip differential, and bold red lettering that sharply contrasted with its rare black exterior—a color seen on just 62 RS Tourings globally.
Like many early 911s, the car passed through various ownerships, including time in Japan and the United States, where it was cosmetically altered to resemble a slant-nose 911 Turbo. Fortunately, its RS identity remained intact. In 2001, Los Angeles collector Dave Buhain acquired the car and confirmed its provenance with Porsche’s factory archives. By 2004, a painstaking restoration was underway, using only original and new-old-stock RS parts, including a correct 2.7-liter engine case and genuine body panels. The completed car debuted at Rennsport Reunion IV in 2011.
Since arriving in the UK, the RS underwent further enhancements by BS Motorsport, including a £65,000 bare-metal repaint and chassis realignment. Recent refinements by Canford Classics added correct rear seats and period-correct 1973-dated Fuchs wheels.
This RS is more than a museum piece—it’s a driving legend. With its unmatched combination of rarity, correctness, and meticulous care, it offers collectors a truly investment-grade Porsche with global provenance and concours credibility.
