RM Sotheby’s has secured a historic addition to its upcoming Paris auction in February 2025: the 1998 Williams FW20 chassis FW20-03, famously driven by former World Champion Jacques Villeneuve. This remarkable machine from the late 1990s, a golden era in modern Formula 1, will first be displayed at RM Sotheby’s London auction on November 1-2 before making its way to the prestigious Salles du Carrousel at the Louvre Palace in Paris.

Chassis FW20-03 is a significant car from Williams Heritage, embodying the team’s 1998 season efforts to defend their championship title. Driven by Villeneuve, the FW20-03 achieved notable placements, including a 5th-place finish in the Australian Grand Prix and a 4th-place finish in San Marino. It was also driven by the likes of Juan Pablo Montoya and Heinz-Harald Frentzen during testing sessions, further adding to its legacy.

This example comes equipped with a “show” Mecachrome V-10 engine, making it ideal for historic racing events and demonstrations. With its redolent V-10 engine and pedigree, the FW20-03 would make a striking centerpiece for any motorsport collection or Formula 1 enthusiast’s display.

Offered without reserve, the Williams FW20 is expected to fetch between €200,000 and €300,000. This sale follows the high-profile auction of a 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Competizione last year, underscoring RM Sotheby’s ongoing success with iconic racing machines. The FW20-03 offers collectors a rare opportunity to own a genuine piece of Formula 1 history, a reminder of Williams Racing’s glorious days in one of F1’s most memorable periods.
