584-Mile 1987 Buick GNX Heads to Market: Is This Another GNX Cash Cow?

A 1987 Buick GNX showing just 584 miles may be poised to set a new benchmark when it crosses the block. Number 119 of 547 built, the car has been preserved as one of the lowest-mileage survivors of Buick’s legendary turbocharged muscle car and now carries the kind of provenance that collectors covet.

The Grand National Experimental was Buick’s 1987 send-off, engineered in partnership with McLaren Performance Technologies and ASC. Its turbocharged 3.8-liter V6, paired with a four-speed automatic, was factory-rated at 276 horsepower and 360 pound-feet of torque, though real-world performance often exceeded those figures. Period tests showed the GNX quicker to 60 mph than a Ferrari 328 or Porsche 911 Turbo, giving it instant credibility.

Auction results in recent years show how valuable these cars have become. In January 2022, Barrett-Jackson sold a 1987 GNX with 8.5 miles for over $300,000, setting a record for the model. Other low-mileage cars have consistently achieved $200,000 to $300,000 at top sales, including Bring a Trailer’s 2023 result of $215,000 for a 1,200-mile example. Even cars with moderate mileage, often 10,000 miles or more, routinely sell above $150,000.

Given those precedents, a GNX with just 584 miles—essentially still in showroom condition—could attract bids north of $300,000 and potentially much higher if two determined collectors face off. While not as untouched as single-digit-mile cars, its originality, mileage, and documentation place it among the most desirable examples still in private hands.

With GNX values trending upward as the final expression of Buick’s turbocharged performance era, this rare survivor could become one of the headline sales of the year.
