A heavily modified 1979 GMC Jimmy Sierra, known as “Desert Fox,” is now being offered at no reserve on Bring a Trailer, bringing SEMA pedigree and modern upgrades to the classic SUV platform.

The truck, built by Big Fish Garage of Grand Island, Nebraska, gained recognition after being displayed at the 2017 SEMA Show, where it was awarded an Optima Battery Golden Ticket for entry into the Ultimate Street Car Invitational. The build pairs period-correct styling with contemporary performance enhancements, making it one of the more distinctive square-body customs to surface in recent years.

Under the hood, power comes from a 5.3-liter Vortec V8 equipped with a BTR Stage 3 camshaft, ICT billet intake manifold, custom radiator, and Speed Engineering headers feeding into an exhaust with electronic cutouts. The engine is paired with a modified 4L60E four-speed automatic transmission featuring a Monster torque converter and performance shift kit. Power is delivered to the rear wheels through an Auburn limited-slip differential with 4.10:1 gearing.

The SUV sits on an extensively reworked suspension with PB Fab control arms, Ridetech shocks, uprated springs, and a four-link rear setup with a C-notch. Stopping power comes from front disc and rear drum brakes, while AGR steering components help refine handling.

Visually, the Jimmy wears a Buckskin finish accented with Low Sierra stripes, body-colored removable hardtop, chrome trim, and 20-inch US Mags Sierra wheels wrapped in Toyo Proxes tires. Inside, the cabin features Highlander-style orange plaid upholstery, modern instrumentation, and a retro-look stereo paired with Kicker speakers. The air conditioning system has also been refreshed, ensuring comfort alongside performance.

With only 3,000 miles added since its completion, this one-off Jimmy blends SEMA show appeal with everyday drivability. See it here.
