1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz Convertible Heads to Saratoga Motorcar Auction in Bankruptcy Sale

A rare 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz convertible, widely regarded as a high point of midcentury American design, will soon cross the auction block as part of a bankruptcy estate sale.

Cadillac’s Eldorado Biarritz was the pinnacle of luxury when it debuted, and only 1,320 convertibles were produced for the 1959 model year. Known for its towering tailfins and extravagant styling by Dave Holls under the influence of Harley Earl, the car embodied Detroit’s pursuit of excess at the height of postwar optimism.

This example, chassis number 59E038951, is finished in Seminole Red with a white leather interior accented in red. Beneath the hood sits Cadillac’s original 390-cubic-inch V8, rated at 345 horsepower through triple carburetors and paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. The model came equipped with power steering, power windows, power locks, and power brakes, reflecting the brand’s claim of being “The Standard of the World.”

Adding to its rarity, the Biarritz is one of just 99 examples fitted with factory bucket seats and one of 409 built with factory-installed air conditioning. That combination makes it among the most desirable specifications available from Cadillac that year.

The Eldorado’s fins, inspired by World War II-era P-38 Lightning aircraft, grew to their most dramatic proportions in 1959. The design was a response to Chrysler’s “Forward Look” styling and cemented Cadillac’s dominance in the marketplace.

Despite Cadillac producing more than 138,000 vehicles that year, the Eldorado Biarritz accounted for less than one percent of total output, underscoring its exclusivity.

The car is being offered at no reserve through Saratoga Motorcar Auction, with the sale subject to U.S. Bankruptcy Court approval. The vehicle will be sold as-is, with bidders encouraged to conduct due diligence.

The Saratoga Auto Auction takes place September 19-20. TWe anticipate more than 250 vehicles, several with no reserve and 100 lots of memorabilia. The auction is the highlight of several events including Thursday’s Preview Day and an evening concert. Plan a trip or register to bid online.
