RM Sotheby’s Best of M Collection Showcases BMW’s Most Coveted Performance Icons

RM Sotheby’s will bring a lineup of BMW performance icons to the auction block this month, with its Best of M Collection highlighting the evolution of the marque’s famed M division across more than five decades.

Scheduled for October 18 in Munich, the auction gathers some of BMW’s most coveted models, from early performance trailblazers to modern-day halo cars. Though the sale does not include every hallmark of M history, such as the 3.0 CS “Batmobile” or classic M5 sedans, it is a carefully curated selection showcasing rarity, preservation, and driving pedigree.

Among the earliest offerings is a 1975 BMW 2002 turbo, widely recognized as one of the first turbocharged road cars, alongside BMW’s first mid-engine supercar, the M1. The collection also includes pre-millennium standouts such as the E30 M3 convertible, the limited-production E36 M3 GT, and a BMW Z1 with its distinctive drop-down doors. A 2003 ALPINA Roadster V8 represents the sole non-M entry in the lineup.

Headlining the sale is a 2011 BMW M3 CRT (Carbon Racing Technology), one of just 67 built. Finished with lightweight carbon fiber components and powered by a stroked 4.4-liter V8, the example on offer has only 168 kilometers recorded, believed to be the lowest-mileage CRT in existence. RM Sotheby’s estimates the car will command between €170,000 and €220,000 ($178,000–$231,000).

Other highlights include a Phoenix Yellow BMW M Coupe with just 7,500 kilometers, expected to fetch up to €100,000, and a Dakar Yellow M Roadster. More recent machines, including a 2016 M2, an M4 GTS, and the track-focused 2023 M4 CSL, underscore how the M division continues to produce some of the most engaging performance cars in the world.

For collectors, the Munich sale offers a rare chance to secure pristine examples of BMW’s most celebrated driving machines.
