Record-Breaking Porsche 918 Spyder Brings $6.05 Million at Auction

More than a decade after redefining what a road-legal hybrid supercar could achieve, the Porsche 918 Spyder has reached a new milestone in the collector market. A 2015 example equipped with the Weissach Package and finished in rare Pure Orange sold for $6.05 million at Mecum’s Kissimmee auction, setting a new world record for the model and eclipsing the prior high of $3.93 million.

The sale underscores the growing demand for top-tier examples of Porsche’s hybrid hypercar, particularly those with rare specifications and extremely low mileage. This car has covered just 845 miles since new, a figure that places it among the least-used 918 Spyders in existence. Fewer than 1,000 examples of the model were produced overall, adding to its long-term collectibility.

What separates this particular car from others is its specification. The Pure Orange paint is a paint-to-sample color that cost $21,000 when the car was ordered new in 2014. It is the only 918 Spyder finished in this color, making it instantly recognizable. The interior continues the theme, with orange piping replacing the standard Acid Green accents to match the exterior.

The car is also fitted with the Weissach Package, a highly sought-after option that reduces weight by roughly 90 pounds. The package incorporates extensive carbon-fiber components, including the windscreen frame and mirror housings, along with magnesium wheels and an extended rear diffuser. A front axle lift system was also specified at a cost of $10,500. When new, the car carried a total price of $964,875 including options and destination.

Performance remains a defining part of the 918 Spyder’s appeal. Its 4.6-liter naturally aspirated V8 is paired with front and rear electric motors, creating an all-wheel-drive system that delivers 887 horsepower and 944 lb-ft of torque. Independent testing recorded acceleration to 60 mph in under 2.5 seconds and a top speed exceeding 200 mph. The car’s capability was cemented more than 12 years ago when it became the first street-legal vehicle to lap the Nürburgring in under seven minutes.

The record-setting result may influence values across the broader 918 Spyder market, particularly for low-mileage, well-optioned examples. For now, this Pure Orange car stands alone as the most valuable Porsche 918 Spyder ever sold.
