A highly documented and exceptionally rare 1967 Mercury Comet Cyclone R-Code GT is set to appear at the GAA Classic Car Auction in February 2026, offering collectors a rare opportunity to acquire one of Mercury’s most purpose-built performance cars of the muscle car era.

Scheduled to run on Saturday, the Cyclone carries VIN 7H15R542313 and is finished in Trafalgar Blue over a black interior. It is one of only 19 R-Code GT examples built, a figure that places it among the most exclusive factory drag-focused cars produced by any Detroit manufacturer in the 1960s.

The R-Code designation signifies the presence of a 427-cubic-inch V8, and this example is powered by a Medium Riser 427 that is original to the car. Designed with straight-line performance in mind, the Cyclone reflects Mercury’s targeted effort to compete in drag racing during the height of the muscle car wars. The engine is paired with a Top Loader manual transmission, a combination known for durability under high-output conditions.

Weight reduction played a key role in the Cyclone R-Code GT’s design. This car features a lightweight fiberglass hood without insulation, along with factory heater and radio antenna deletes. These omissions were intentional, reinforcing the model’s mission as a performance-first machine rather than a comfort-oriented street car.
Inside, the car retains bucket seats and a straightforward, driver-focused layout consistent with its competition roots. Documentation includes a Marti Report, supporting the car’s authenticity and confirming its rare factory configuration.

Adding to its provenance, the Cyclone spent approximately 40 years in the previous owner’s collection, a factor that underscores its long-term preservation and limited ownership history. Surviving examples of R-Code Cyclones are seldom offered publicly, particularly those retaining their original engine and verified documentation.
Mercury’s Cyclone program often lived in the shadow of better-known Ford counterparts, but the R-Code GT stands as one of the brand’s most extreme factory efforts. With its limited production, drag-race intent, and verified history, this 1967 Cyclone represents a significant piece of American muscle car history.

As anticipation builds for the February 2026 GAA Classic Car Auction, this Cyclone R-Code GT is expected to be one of the standout consignments, appealing to collectors who value rarity, documentation, and factory-built performance pedigree.
