Ultra-Rare Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss Set for Paris Auction

A rare 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss, the final and most extreme version of the SLR program, is scheduled to be offered at auction in Paris on Jan. 30. The car is slated to cross the block at RM Sotheby’s with a pre-sale estimate of $3.25 million to $3.85 million, reflecting its limited production, historical significance, and low mileage.

The SLR McLaren marked Mercedes-Benz’s return to building modern super sports cars, drawing heavily on the brand’s motorsport heritage. Its design and engineering referenced iconic models such as the original 1955 SLR and the Uhlenhaut Coupé, while incorporating Formula 1–influenced technology developed during the Silver Arrows era. The Stirling Moss edition represented the culmination of that vision and the final model produced under the Mercedes-McLaren partnership.

Unveiled in 2009 and designed by Yoon Il-hun, the Stirling Moss variant was conceived as a modern tribute to the roofless SLR race cars driven in the 1950s by Stirling Moss. It eliminated both the roof and windscreen, reducing weight by approximately 200 kilograms compared with the standard SLR. Power was supplied by a supercharged V8 producing 641 horsepower, enabling acceleration to 100 kilometers per hour in under 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 350 kilometers per hour.

Production was limited to just 75 examples, all completed in 2009 and allocated exclusively to existing SLR owners. The example headed to auction was finished on Dec. 16, 2009, in Crystal Laurit Silver Metallic over a Black and Anthracite leather interior with Silver Arrow Red accents. Equipment includes carbon-fiber seats, red brake calipers, and 19-inch twin-spoke wheels.

Originally retained by Daimler as a demonstration vehicle, the car was first road-registered in 2011 before being sold to a private owner. It has covered only 1,935 kilometers at the time of cataloging and was serviced as recently as September 2025.

The car is offered with period accessories, including driving caps and goggles, protective covers, documentation, and a scale model, underscoring its status as one of the most distinctive and collectible modern Mercedes-Benz performance cars to reach the auction market.
