Ferrari Names First Electric Model Luce as Design Details Slowly Emerge

Ferrari has officially named its first fully electric vehicle Luce, marking a notable milestone for the Italian automaker as it prepares to enter the battery-electric market. The name was revealed during an event held at San Francisco’s TransAmerica Pyramid, where Ferrari showcased the vehicle’s interior design and user interface rather than its exterior or performance figures.

Until now, the project had been known internally and publicly as Elettrica, a placeholder name that reflected its powertrain rather than its identity. Ferrari leadership said the new name better reflects the broader ambition behind the model and signals a shift in how the company wants its first electric car to be perceived.

Luce translates to “light,” a concept Ferrari associates with several themes tied to the project, including forward-looking technology, reduced complexity, performance, and a sense of newness. The name is intended to suggest speed and innovation while pointing toward the brand’s future direction as it expands beyond traditional internal combustion engines.

One of the more significant elements surrounding the electric Ferrari is its design partnership with LoveFrom, a design firm founded in 2019. The firm was co-founded by Jony Ive, who spent three decades shaping Apple’s most influential products, including the iMac, iPod, iPhone, iPad, and MacBook line. LoveFrom is also led by industrial designer Marc Newson, known for his work on Ford’s 1999 021C concept vehicle.

Both designers are widely associated with minimalist, highly distilled design philosophies, favoring simplicity and clarity over visual excess. That approach appears to align with Ferrari’s choice of a short, understated model name, reflecting a deliberate move away from technical or descriptive naming conventions.

Ferrari has not released specifications, performance data, or a production timeline for Luce. The company has instead opted for a controlled, incremental rollout of information, focusing first on design language and user experience rather than mechanical details.

As Ferrari moves closer to bringing its first electric vehicle to market, the introduction of the Luce name signals that the project is transitioning from concept to reality, positioning the model as a defining step in the brand’s next era.
