On September 16, 2024, Waterbury Police Department’s Auto Theft Task Force (ATTF) recovered a stolen 2023 Ferrari G12 GTS, valued at $575,000, using a pair of AirPods left inside the vehicle by its owner. The luxury car had been reported stolen from Greenwich, CT, and was located in Waterbury. After tracking the AirPods’ signal to a gas station, officers identified the vehicle’s operator as 22-year-old Dion Schontten of Waterbury. Though Schontten fled the scene, police obtained an arrest warrant, charging him with Larceny of a Motor Vehicle.
On September 25, 2024, police located a stolen 2023 Acura TLX near Edgewood Avenue in Waterbury, involving the same suspect, Schontten, and a second offender, Keon Webster, 19. Both men were taken into custody, with Webster facing charges for his seventh offense of motor vehicle theft. Webster also had an active warrant related to a previous stolen Audi S8 case.
Schontten, a repeat offender, was charged with Larceny of a Motor Vehicle for the second time, while Webster faced multiple charges, including Larceny of a Motor Vehicle for the seventh time. Schontten was initially held on a $300,000 bond, which was later reduced to $150,000 during his arraignment. Webster’s bond was reduced from $1,000,000 to $300,000. Both suspects are known to law enforcement for their extensive criminal history involving vehicle thefts.
Waterbury Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo emphasized the department’s commitment to curbing motor vehicle thefts and ensuring repeat offenders are held accountable. Investigators are continuing to look into additional stolen vehicle incidents linked to the suspects.
