Audi is set to reintroduce its R8 supercar, reimagined as a plug-in hybrid and scheduled to debut in 2027. This next-generation R8 will draw heavily from the Lamborghini Temerario, signaling a robust continuation of Audi’s collaboration with Lamborghini under the Volkswagen Group umbrella.
The original Audi R8 made its mark as a mid-engined supercar, sharing critical components with Lamborghini’s Gallardo and later the Huracan. As Audi discontinues the purely combustion-engined R8, the forthcoming model will inherit the advanced hybrid technology and chassis of the Lamborghini Temerario, according to a detailed report by Autocar.

At the heart of this transformation is the Temerario’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, which produces a formidable 789 horsepower. This engine is supplemented by three electric motors that bring the total output to 907 horsepower, with the potential to exceed even these figures as the platform develops. The sophisticated all-wheel-drive system incorporates two motors at the front axle and a third between the engine and the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, enhancing both performance and energy efficiency.
This formidable powertrain not only promises explosive acceleration — potentially under three seconds for 0-60 mph — but also a top speed that could eclipse 200 mph. The inclusion of a small 3.8-kWh battery offers limited electric-only driving, aligning with Audi’s ongoing strategy to bolster its e-tron range and emphasize sustainability alongside performance.
Audi plans to offer the new R8 in both coupe and convertible formats, with a possible ‘Performance’ variant to follow, echoing the brand’s history of high-powered editions. This next-gen R8 is also expected to contribute to Audi’s motorsport legacy, potentially serving as a basis for future FIA-homologated race cars, continuing its storied presence at prestigious events like the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Autocar’s report indicates that the R8’s revival as a hybrid supercar will not only enhance Audi’s performance credentials but also reinforce its commitment to electrification. The R8’s reintroduction will likely be a cornerstone in Audi’s strategy to transition more of its lineup to electric power, representing a fusion of high-octane motorsport heritage with cutting-edge hybrid technology.
