Bentley Unveils Bentayga X Concept for Ice Racing Debut in Austria

Bentley has pushed its performance heritage into unfamiliar territory with the debut of the Bentayga X Concept, a one-off SUV developed specifically for competition on ice. The concept made its public appearance at the FAT Ice Race in Zell am See, Austria, marking a departure from traditional racetracks and signaling a new direction for the British automaker’s experimental designs.

The Bentayga X Concept builds on the Bentayga Speed platform and retains its 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine, producing 641 horsepower. Power is delivered through permanent four-wheel drive, supported by an air suspension system and a 48-volt active anti-roll setup designed to maintain stability on low-grip surfaces. An Akrapovic titanium exhaust system enhances both performance and sound, fitting for an event that celebrates automotive spectacle as much as competition.

To prepare the SUV for racing on ice, Bentley introduced extensive structural changes. The track was widened by 4.7 inches to improve stability, while the wheel arches were extended to accommodate the increased width and a new set of 22-inch forged wheels wrapped in off-road tires. Ride height was raised by approximately 2.2 inches, resulting in nearly 12.2 inches of ground clearance and a wading depth exceeding 21.6 inches, providing capability for deep snow and potentially slushy conditions.

Additional features underline the vehicle’s purpose-built nature. A roof rack carries equipment and supports four auxiliary lights for improved visibility on the ice. The rack also holds a small go-kart linked to the FAT Karting League, reinforcing the event’s focus on grassroots motorsports culture.

The Bentayga X Concept was developed as part of a multi-year collaboration between Bentley and FAT International, an organization that has evolved from logistics and motorsports sponsorship into hosting automotive-focused cultural events. While the concept appears dramatically different from standard Bentayga models, Bentley has indicated it was created to gather feedback and explore the possibility of a more off-road-capable version of the luxury SUV.

For now, the Bentayga X Concept remains a singular experiment, but its debut suggests Bentley is testing how far its flagship SUV can be pushed beyond traditional expectations.
