BMW Confirms New Halo Supercar to Lead M Division into Bold New Era

BMW has officially confirmed the development of an all-new halo supercar, poised to become the crown jewel of its storied M Division. The announcement, made during the 2025 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, represents a major strategic shift for BMW’s performance arm and signals a return to exclusive, bespoke high-performance vehicles.

This next-generation flagship will draw inspiration from the recently unveiled BMW Skytop, a $500,000 limited-edition roadster that captivated enthusiasts with its retro-modern styling and exclusivity. The Skytop’s success has reinforced BMW’s strategy of building low-volume, ultra-premium M models that serve not only as engineering showcases but also as image boosters for the broader brand.

According to BMW M Vice President Sylvia Neubauer, the new halo car is already under internal development and will embody BMW M’s ultimate vision of performance and design. “We’re working on something truly special,” Neubauer said. “If BMW M does a supercar, it must be 100 percent right—we are creating a dream car.”

While technical details remain undisclosed, industry speculation points to influence from the canceled i16 project, a once-near-production supercar that echoed the legendary BMW M1. That model was ultimately shelved in favor of the high-performance XM SUV. However, with renewed focus on exclusivity and design prestige, BMW appears ready to make good on long-standing supercar ambitions.

The upcoming supercar is expected to rival models like the Porsche 911, and could potentially feature plug-in hybrid or fully electric powertrains, in line with the brand’s ongoing Neue Klasse EV platform development.

BMW insiders hint at bold styling, advanced aerodynamics, and race-inspired engineering. Whether it channels the M1’s spirit or forges a new legacy, the halo project aims to redefine what a modern M car can be.

Production details and a reveal timeline have yet to be confirmed, but BMW enthusiasts and collectors alike are already watching closely.
