Bugatti Restores High-Mileage Veyron Super Sport Prototype Linked to Record-Breaking Era

Bugatti has completed the restoration of a high-mileage Veyron Super Sport prototype that played a role in the development and promotion of one of the fastest production cars ever built.

The car, part of the Veyron Super Sport program tied to the model that set a 267.8 mph production-car speed record in 2010, recently underwent a full refurbishment through Bugatti’s factory restoration initiative known as La Maison Pur Sang. The program, introduced in 2020, focuses on authenticating and restoring historic Bugatti models.

While the black-and-orange Veyron Super Sport that established the record became one of the most recognizable vehicles of the modern Bugatti era, the achievement was supported by several similar vehicles used behind the scenes. The restored car was one of those prototypes, assisting engineers during development of the ultimate Veyron variant and later helping promote the Super Sport World Record Edition released to customers.

After contributing to development work that refined various onboard systems, the prototype transitioned into a public-facing role. It appeared in demonstrations, promotional activities, and photoshoots for media and potential buyers. Over time, those duties added significant mileage for a hypercar, with the vehicle ultimately recording 43,992 miles.

That usage left the prototype ready for restoration, giving Bugatti the opportunity to showcase the capabilities of its factory program. Over six months, technicians refreshed the interior while restoring the exterior finish. The car’s paint and exposed carbon-fiber surfaces were rejuvenated, including the application of a new protective clear coat.

Some mechanical components were also updated. Radiators and electronic systems were replaced with parts matching production specifications. Although those updates remove certain traces of the car’s earlier prototype configuration, the work aligns with the preferences of the collector who will now house the vehicle.

Key mechanical elements remain original, including the quad-turbocharged 8.0-liter W16 engine and the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. In Super Sport form, the Veyron’s power output increased to 1,183 horsepower, compared with the 1,001 horsepower of the standard model. Aerodynamic improvements also helped the vehicle reach its record-setting top speed.

The Veyron’s legacy later carried into the Chiron era, which pushed performance further when a version of the model reached 304.7 mph in 2019. More recently, Bugatti has continued pursuing performance milestones, including a 2024 open-top speed record achieved by the Chiron-based Mistral.

The restored prototype now stands as a reminder of the engineering and testing efforts that supported one of Bugatti’s most celebrated achievements.
