De Tomaso has officially unveiled a production-ready version of its long-awaited P72 supercar, a $1.6 million marvel that marks the Italian automaker’s most ambitious comeback to date. Announced more than five years ago, the P72 has been described as a “Modern Day Time Machine,” a tribute to the ill-fated P70 collaboration between Carroll Shelby and Alejandro de Tomaso in the 1960s.
First revealed as a concept in 2019, the P72’s journey to production was hindered by the COVID-19 pandemic, which delayed development and cast doubt on its viability. Now, with the completion of chassis 001, the automaker has entered the final stages of testing and evaluation before customer deliveries begin.
Although not yet painted, the prototype showcases the car’s stunning carbon-fiber body, which retains the flowing, vintage-inspired design that captured attention during its debut. Unlike earlier plans to use a bespoke carbon-fiber tub shared with sister company Apollo’s Intensa Emozione, the production model features a new chassis developed with German motorsports firm HWA. This change enhances safety and improves cabin ergonomics, offering more headroom and legroom for its occupants.
At its heart, the P72 is powered by a massive 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine. The mill, reminiscent of the second-generation Ford GT’s powertrain, generates over 700 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque, promising a thrilling yet refined driving experience.
De Tomaso plans to produce just 72 units of the P72, ensuring exclusivity for its owners. Each car starts at €1.6 million (approximately $1.67 million), with customizations further elevating its bespoke appeal. Additionally, the company is already gearing up for its next offering, the track-focused V-12-powered P900.
The P72 isn’t just a car—it’s a statement of resilience, artistry, and a celebration of De Tomaso’s legacy, merging past inspirations with modern innovation.
