A historically significant 1965 Ford Mustang K-Code Convertible is scheduled to be offered at auction in February 2026, carrying credentials that place it among the earliest high-performance Mustangs ever produced. According to the K-Code Registry, this example is recognized as the second-earliest K-Code convertible and the third-earliest K-Code Mustang known to the registry, making it a standout among early production cars.

The car’s importance begins with its build date. This Mustang was assembled on June 8, 1964, marking the second day of High-Performance 289 production. That timing places it at the very start of Ford’s rollout of the legendary K-Code option, a package that transformed the Mustang from a sporty new compact into a serious performance car. The K-Code 289 was Ford’s top small-block offering at the time, designed to deliver higher revs and stronger output than standard V8s.

This example is a 1964½-era Mustang, built during the model’s earliest production period, and configured as a convertible. Power is routed through a four-speed manual transmission, reinforcing its driver-focused character. An 8,000-rpm Rally-Pac tachometer and gauge cluster further reflect its high-performance intent, while style steel wheels fitted with redline tires maintain the car’s period-correct appearance.

The Mustang is finished in white, paired with a white and red interior, a combination that underscores the clean, classic presentation associated with early convertibles. With its two-door open-top body style, the car represents a configuration that was both desirable when new and increasingly scarce today, particularly when paired with the K-Code drivetrain.

The VIN, 5F08K158819, confirms its K-Code status and early production sequence. While many K-Code Mustangs were driven hard, modified, or lost over time, examples with documented early build dates and registry recognition are especially prized by collectors. Convertibles from this period are rarer still, as most early high-performance Mustangs were ordered as coupes or fastbacks.

Scheduled to cross the block on Saturday during the February 2026 auction, this Mustang arrives with the kind of provenance that tends to draw serious attention. Early K-Code cars occupy a unique place in Mustang history, representing the moment Ford’s new pony car intersected with the brand’s racing and performance ambitions.

As collectors continue to focus on originality, documentation, and early production significance, this June 8, 1964-built K-Code Convertible stands out as a rare opportunity to acquire a foundational piece of Mustang performance history—one tied directly to the very beginning of the Hi-Po legend.
