Ferrari has announced that it will continue manufacturing its iconic V12 engines for as long as regulations allow. Unlike many other automakers who are rapidly transitioning to electric powertrains, the Italian luxury carmaker is committed to its largest internal combustion engines, maintaining the legacy and performance that Ferrari enthusiasts cherish.

Emanuele Carando, Product Marketing and Marketing Intelligence Director at Ferrari, confirmed the company’s stance: “We will produce naturally aspirated V12s until the law [no longer] allows us to.” Carando also expressed hope that future legislation will permit continued production, possibly through advancements in more sustainable petrol technologies. “We believe it’s important to give to our clients who love this engine, both in the present and probably in the future,” he added.

Ferrari’s latest flagship GT, the 12Cilindri, showcases the latest iteration of their 6.5-liter V12 engine. This model is one of the last remaining non-electrified V12s, emphasizing Ferrari’s commitment to pure internal combustion power. Carando noted that while hybrid powertrains were considered for the 12Cilindri, the added weight did not justify the performance gains for this particular grand tourer. “A naturally aspirated engine with a combination of electric components, according to our feeling, adds weight without really improving the performance so much, especially for this kind of car,” he explained.

However, the future of Ferrari’s V12 engines faces uncertainty as the company prepares for its next-generation flagship supercar, set to replace the LaFerrari. This upcoming model is unlikely to feature a V12 engine, signaling a potential shift in Ferrari’s approach to its high-performance powertrains.

As the automotive industry evolves, Ferrari remains dedicated to its V12 heritage, aiming to balance regulatory compliance with the desires of its loyal customers. The continuation of the V12 engine line is a testament to Ferrari’s commitment to performance, tradition, and the visceral driving experience that has defined the brand for decades.
