Emanuele Carando, Ferrari’s product marketing and marketing intelligence director, emphasized that while the forthcoming EV will feature an electric powertrain, it will still produce the distinct roar that Ferrari enthusiasts expect.
Slated for a debut late next year, Ferrari’s first EV remains largely under wraps. However, Carando assured in a recent interview with Drive that the company is dedicated to ensuring its EV offers the same thrills as its traditional sports cars. He highlighted that elements such as power, force, weight, brakes, and notably, sound, will be integral to the vehicle’s design. This commitment means that, while the EV might not initially showcase a dramatic leap in acceleration or power, it will prioritize the hallmark attributes of Ferrari’s driving experience, including its iconic sound.
“Whenever we talk about a car, we talk about the driving thrills, which is a combination of power, force, weight, brakes [and] sound,” Carando said. He added that the sound of the EV would be “authentic” and comparable to the roar of Ferrari’s traditional internal combustion engines, including the newly unveiled 12Cilindri.
Ferrari is not the first automaker aiming to replicate the sound of high-performance gasoline engines in their EVs. Dodge’s upcoming battery-powered Charger Daytona, for instance, will feature a synthetic “Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust” system mimicking the sounds of its previous Hemi V-8 engines. Whether Ferrari will use similar technology or develop a unique solution remains to be seen.
Despite the shift towards electric powertrains, Ferrari is not planning to phase out its iconic combustion engines anytime soon. Carando reiterated that Ferrari will continue to produce V-12 engines as long as regulations permit, ensuring that traditional Ferrari fans will still have access to the brand’s legendary performance and sound.
