Florida Billionaire Declines $3.5M Offer for Ultra-Rare Porsche 918 Weissach

A Florida billionaire has turned down a $3.5 million offer for his Porsche 918 Spyder Weissach Edition, insisting the car’s rarity makes it essentially priceless.

10 Must-Have Tools and Gear for the Modern Car Collector

Howard Panes, an entrepreneur and car collector, revealed on Instagram that he has received multiple offers for the hypercar, which is one of only five known examples finished in Guards Red. He has so far refused them all, saying the limited-production supercar is too rare to part with.

The Porsche 918 is part of the so-called “holy trinity” of hypercars, alongside the Ferrari LaFerrari and McLaren P1. Launched in 2013, the hybrid-powered machine paired a 4.6-liter V8 with dual electric motors, producing a combined 887 horsepower. With the optional Weissach package—focused on weight reduction and track performance—the 918 was capable of 0-60 mph in just 2.5 seconds and a Nürburgring lap time under seven minutes.

Only 918 units were built before production ended in 2015, and the Weissach package accounted for an even smaller fraction. Panes’ Guards Red example is among the rarest configurations, making it especially coveted among collectors.

Recent sales suggest the market for 918s remains strong. Standard models have traded hands for around $2 million, while Weissach-equipped cars routinely climb higher. A pristine example sold at auction in 2024 for more than $3.2 million.

Panes, however, appears uninterested in cashing in. “You can’t put a price on this one,” he wrote on social media, emphasizing the car’s unique specification and collectible value.

For enthusiasts, his stance underscores how modern hypercars have shifted from engineering marvels to cultural icons. While $3.5 million is a staggering figure, for some collectors, certain cars transcend the marketplace entirely.
