GWM Aims to Top Ferrari with Ambitious Supercar Project in Development Since 2019

Chinese auto manufacturer Great Wall Motor (GWM) has confirmed it is developing a high-performance supercar it boldly claims will be “better” than Ferrari’s flagship SF90 Stradale. In development for over five years, the project reflects China’s rapidly growing ambitions in the global high-performance car market.

The announcement was made by GWM Chief Technology Officer Wu Huixiao in a recent interview on Weibo, China’s popular social media platform. While exact specifications remain under wraps, Wu emphasized that the vehicle will deliver “explosive adrenaline and dopamine,” positioning it as a true emotional and performance rival to million-dollar European hypercars.

Unusually, the vehicle may not adopt GWM’s recently revealed 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 hybrid, which was originally designed for the brand’s luxury Tank SUV line. Wu suggested that the engine may be too large for the upcoming supercar, hinting that engineers are exploring either a smaller engine or an entirely new powertrain configuration.

That opens the door to speculation, with some pointing to GWM’s existing high-output 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 hybrid from the Tank 700, or even a cutting-edge application of the company’s 2.0-liter turbocharged Hi4-Z hybrid system, which produces 635 kW (851 hp) and 1139 Nm of torque with two electric motors.

GWM Chairman Jack Wei, notably seen driving a Ferrari SF90 in China, appears to be personally invested in the project. The company has brought in international performance experts and is investing in advanced materials like carbon fiber—though it hasn’t confirmed if that material will be used for the supercar’s chassis.

While a launch date remains undecided, Wu noted that cost control remains a top priority as development continues. Still, GWM’s stated goal is clear: to stun the market with a world-class performance machine that challenges the dominance of legacy European marques.
