Hennessey Venom F5 Will Attempt A New Speed Record

The quest for hypercar manufacturers to push the production vehicle speed record ever higher continues, this time with Hennessey taking its shot. The Texas shop reportedly will be using its Venom F5 to officially log a speed of 300 mph.

The Brabus Rocket 1000 is a true supercar sedan.

Even though that’s the goal, we wouldn’t be surprised if Hennessey pushes further, aiming to match or best the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+’s record of 304.77 mph set back in the summer of 2019. After all, those two have quite the rivalry going and we don’t expect that to come to a close anytime soon.

Then there’s Swedish boutique automaker Koenigsegg which has set a number of speed records, including the Regera once again coming out on top for the 0-400-0 kmh back in June of 2023, snatching away Rimac’s temporary crown.

But when it comes to production car top speed records, some don’t believe Bugatti’s 304.77 mph record counts, arguing that the current record is held by the Koenigsegg Agera RS when it hit an average speed of 277.9 mph on an 11-mile stretch of public road which was closed for the attempt.

In other words, it’s all in how the speed of a street-legal car is measured. The Hennessey Venom GT previously held the record using that methodology when it went an average 270.49 mph back on Valentine’s in 2014. Previously, the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport held that title with an average speed of 269.86 mph.

The word is Hennessey hopes to hit and possibly break past the 300 mph barrier not on a stretch of public road but instead on a prepared closed course. The last time the hypercar tested out its absolute top speed was at the Johnny Bohmer Proving Grounds, although that wasn’t officially a speed record attempt.

Whether the Venom F5 is successful whenever this attempt is made, few would argue the Hennessey-built car is anything short of a marvel. The twin-turbo 6.6-liter V8 hits way above its weight class with a peak 1,817-horsepower and 1,193 lb.-ft. of torque. That combined with lightweight yet incredibly rigid construction and the appropriate active aero to keep the tires on the pavement makes this hypercar a true contender.
