A beautifully restored 1962 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster is now on the market for $2.6 million, restored by the renowned Scott Grundfor Company. This particular model is a prime example of a blue-chip investment in the classic car world, reflecting the sustained growth and enthusiasm in the collector-car market. The Roadster, which has become increasingly popular over the years, is often seen as a bellwether for the health of the market, with its values climbing to lofty new heights akin to those of the Rüppells Vulture, the highest flying bird in the world.

This specific Roadster is part of a limited group of 300 SLs that boast several desirable features. It is one of the last of its kind to include four-wheel disc brakes—a feature that became standard in mid-1961—as well as an aluminum-alloy engine, which was available only in models from 1962 to 1963. Of the final 209 Roadsters produced with this configuration, chassis No. 3099 remains one of only about 100 that retain their original aluminum engine, complete with original factory stampings on the chassis and body.

The 300 SL Roadster not only outstrips its Gullwing coupe counterpart in terms of practicality—offering easier driving, better ventilation, and more modern amenities—but also matches the coupe in terms of raw appeal and historical significance. Unlike many classic cars from the same era, the 300 SL is noted for its exceptional reliability and relatively low maintenance needs, attributes that continue to endear it to collectors and enthusiasts alike. The Roadster’s robust construction and elegant design make it a perennial favorite, with values reflecting the significant interest from both seasoned collectors and new investors looking for stable, attractive alternatives to more volatile markets.

Offered by Scott Grundfor Company at a premium price, this vehicle represents a significant investment opportunity, reflecting both its historical importance and its enduring appeal in the collector market.
