Kalmar Automotive is setting a new standard in the world of Porsche restomods with the introduction of its 9X9 project—a breathtaking reinterpretation of the classic Porsche 911 that blends cutting-edge engineering with retro charm. Making its global debut at The Quail, a Motorsport Gathering, the Kalmar 9X9 is being touted as a “retro hypercar,” offering a transformative driving experience with a price tag starting at $2.15 million, plus a donor Porsche 993.

Unlike traditional restomods, Kalmar’s 9X9 builds on the foundation of the Porsche 993 (1994-1998) while infusing modern technology from the latest 992 model. The car’s carbon-fiber body is both lightweight and aerodynamically refined, generating over 3,000 pounds of downforce—similar to that of a McLaren Senna. With a design that pays homage to the legendary Porsche 959 while incorporating contemporary styling cues, the 9X9 strikes a perfect balance between classic and modern.

Under the hood, the Kalmar 9X9 is powered by a 3.8-liter flat-six turbo engine sourced from the Porsche 911 Turbo, producing a jaw-dropping 930 horsepower. Paired with a double-clutch transmission and an active all-wheel-drive system, this restomod promises blistering performance. Kalmar’s lightweight philosophy extends to the custom suspension and brakes, including 3D-printed titanium calipers developed by CarboBrake and ultra-light magnesium wheels.

The interior is purposefully minimalist, with lightweight seats and analog instrumentation complemented by modern LCD displays. Absent are the typical comforts of a navigation system and stereo, though Bluetooth connectivity is available for those looking to pair their devices. Safety is ensured by a hidden roll cage that doubles as a spaceframe for added stiffness.

Kalmar offers three variants of the 9X9, including the driver-focused 9X9 Sport with a 650-hp turbo engine and manual transmission, and the 9X9 Leichtbau, a lightweight version powered by a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter engine from the Porsche 911 GT3. The Leichtbau sheds most interior embellishments to achieve a mere 2,750 pounds of curb weight.

The first customer delivery of the Kalmar 9X9 is expected in July 2025, with each vehicle built to exact customer specifications over 10 to 12 months. Available in the U.S. through Canepa Group, Inc., prices for this exclusive restomod start at $2.15 million, with the Leichtbau model adding an extra $220,000.
