BMW M Let’s Us Listen to First-Ever Electric M3 With Simulated Engine Sound

BMW M is pushing the boundaries of electric performance with its upcoming all-electric M3, offering a high-powered drivetrain and a uniquely engineered synthetic engine sound designed to maintain the visceral experience of traditional M cars.

The latest teaser, featured in BMW M’s newest development documentary, reveals the first audio sample of the M EV’s artificial engine note. The sound—described as a mix of a supercharger’s whine and the mechanical hum of an internal combustion engine—aims to replicate the auditory excitement associated with BMW’s high-performance lineup. This approach mirrors the synthetic sound design seen in the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, but with a distinct BMW character.

While the teaser is brief, BMW has also highlighted advancements in its EV driving dynamics. Unlike traditional vehicles that operate separate control units for acceleration, braking, steering, and stability, the M EV integrates all four systems into a centralized unit. This innovation enhances traction and handling, particularly on low-grip surfaces like frozen lakes, where BMW has been testing the prototype extensively. Engineers claim the system will allow the electric M3 to “exceed the benchmark” set by the current gas-powered M3.

Performance figures for the prototype indicate around 1,000 horsepower from four electric motors, delivering extreme acceleration and precise torque vectoring. The production model will be built on BMW’s Neue Klasse platform, launching alongside the traditional combustion-powered M3.

BMW has yet to confirm an official release date, but the continued teaser campaign suggests that an unveiling could take place within the next year. For now, enthusiasts can get a first listen to the future of BMW M in the latest episode of the BMW M Electrified documentary series on YouTube.
