Maurizio Reggiani, former chief technical officer at Lamborghini, has taken on an exciting new venture with Eccentrica, a San Marino-based company dedicated to preserving the legacy of internal combustion engines amidst the growing trend towards electric vehicles. Eccentrica, known for modifying and reviving classic Lamborghinis, is set to produce a limited run of 19 modernized Diablo supercars, priced at €1.35 million each.

Reggiani, who retired from Lamborghini last year after a distinguished career that saw him contribute to iconic models such as the Murcielago, Reventon, and Huracan, is now bringing his expertise to Eccentrica. He will advise on the modernization of the classic 1990s Diablo, which was Lamborghini’s first model to exceed a top speed of 200 mph (320 km/h).

The project, unaffiliated with Lamborghini, will transform each Diablo starting from a donor car. The revamped models will retain the signature 5.7-liter V-12 engine from the original vehicles produced between 1991 and 1994. However, the engines will be updated with modern components, including electronic butterfly valves, boosting the power output to 550 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque, slightly surpassing the original’s performance.

Externally, the new Diablos will feature numerous updates, including modernized steering and traction control systems, up-to-date air conditioning, and redesigned headlights. The cars will also undergo significant cosmetic enhancements, ensuring they retain their retro charm while embracing contemporary design elements. Eccentrica aims to replace plastic components with high-quality materials and completely overhaul the ergonomics and user experience, preserving the car’s period-correct design while elevating its luxury and functionality.

Reggiani expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “This is an exceptional possibility to work on a reminder of what happened 30 years ago with something that is of today. We will create an exciting experience for a small number of customers who want to have, let me say, as much Diablo as possible.”

With only 19 units being produced, these exclusive Diablos are poised to become highly sought-after collector’s items. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in June 2025, offering a unique opportunity for supercar enthusiasts to own a piece of automotive history, reimagined for the modern era.
