The Mecum Auctions’ latest event in Houston proved to be a monumental success, drawing enthusiasts and collectors to the NRG Center from April 4-6. The event featured an impressive roster of over a thousand vehicles, with 730 cars successfully sold, achieving a remarkable total of $29.4 million in sales. The auction highlighted the enduring popularity and investment potential of collector cars, ranging from modern muscle marvels to vintage sports cars.

The auction was headlined by a 2008 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster, which commanded a top bid of $357,500. The car stood out as the event’s top seller, closely followed by several 2023 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 models, each fetching bids over $190,000, underscoring the strong market demand for high-performance modern muscle cars with low mileage.

Notable sales also included a variety of other high-value vehicles, reflecting the broad appeal of the auction’s offerings. A 2014 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Replica fetched $220,000, while a 2005 Lamborghini Murcielago Roadster brought in $209,000. Classic cars also had a strong showing; a custom 1960 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible delighted bidders and garnered $181,500, demonstrating the robust interest in beautifully restored vintage vehicles.

The event also featured rare finds such as an ultra-rare 1989 Porsche 930 Turbo Slantnose, which sold for $176,000, and a 1983 Duesenberg II Royalton Dual Cowl Phaeton from the Bob Cather Classics Collection, which nearly made the top sales list with a final bid of $154,000. The diverse offerings and robust sales at the Mecum Houston 2024 auction highlight the vibrant and dynamic nature of the collector car market, showcasing both the passion for automotive history and the potential for significant financial investment.
