The Mercedes-AMG One has once again claimed the Nürburgring lap record for the fastest production car, breaking its own previous record in the process. This F1-powered hypercar now holds the bragging rights for the fastest time around the legendary 12.9-mile Green Hell, beating its old lap time by over five seconds. The new record stands at a blistering 6 minutes and 29.090 seconds, marking the first time a road-legal car has dipped below the 6-minute 30-second threshold.
Mercedes-AMG returned to the Nürburgring two years after the initial record-breaking run, determined to improve upon the previous time of 6 minutes 35.183 seconds. Conditions during the 2021 run were less than ideal, with some damp sections on the track. This time, however, the track was bone dry, and with ambient temperatures hovering at a perfect 15 degrees Celsius, the stage was set for another attempt. Mercedes DTM racer and AMG brand ambassador Maro Engel was behind the wheel for the record-breaking lap, taking full advantage of the optimal conditions to make history.
The Mercedes-AMG One’s performance credentials are nothing short of extraordinary. Powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 engine, a modified version of the same engine found in Mercedes’ 2015 Formula 1 car, it works in tandem with two electric motors and a pair of F1-inspired motor generator units to deliver a combined output of 1,048 horsepower. Advanced aerodynamic features such as a drag reduction system and pushrod suspension further enhance the car’s performance.
Despite a lengthy and expensive development process, the Mercedes-AMG One has finally made its way into production, with only 275 units planned. Each of these hypercars represents the pinnacle of engineering, and this latest Nürburgring record only solidifies the One’s place among the greatest road-legal cars ever built.
