Chassis number 00009/54 holds a storied legacy. Driven by Fangio to victory at the 1955 Buenos Aires Grand Prix and by Moss to achieve the fastest lap at the 1955 Italian Grand Prix at Monza, this car played a pivotal role in Mercedes-Benz’s dominance during the 1954–55 Formula One seasons. It is one of only four surviving examples featuring the streamlined “Stromlinienwagen” bodywork, designed for high-speed circuits.

The W 196 R was developed under the new 2.5-liter Formula One regulations of 1954, showcasing groundbreaking technology. Its straight-eight engine with fuel injection and advanced aerodynamics made it a dominant force on the track. The car debuted triumphantly at the French Grand Prix in Reims, securing a 1-2 finish for Mercedes-Benz and marking the brand’s celebrated return to racing.

Donated to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum in 1965, chassis 00009/54 has been meticulously preserved for nearly six decades. Its sale will benefit the IMS Museum’s efforts to expand its collection and restoration initiatives.

Presented in its original 1955 Monza livery, this car represents a rare opportunity for collectors. It is only the second W 196 R to be offered for private ownership and the first with the iconic Streamliner body.

This auction not only celebrates the W 196 R’s legacy but also highlights the enduring allure of Mercedes-Benz’s racing heritage. For enthusiasts, it’s a chance to own a piece of motorsport history.
