One-of-a-Kind Supercharged 1968 Mustang Fastback Heads to Glendale Mecum Auction

A radically reimagined 1968 Ford Mustang Custom Fastback packed with modern performance and award-winning craftsmanship is scheduled to cross the block at the 2026 Glendale auction on Saturday, March 21.

Built by Mustang Brothers, the one-of-a-kind project blends classic Mustang styling with extensive engineering upgrades and custom design work. The car has accumulated just 200 test miles since completion, highlighting the fresh condition of the build.

Finished in Brittany Blue metallic with Wimbledon White stripes, the fastback immediately stands out thanks to a patent-pending panoramic glass roof—a dramatic modification that required significant structural reinforcement. According to the build details, the car was strengthened with convertible-style inner rockers before the roof was cut, ensuring rigidity while allowing the sweeping glass panel design.

Another unusual feature is the removable Thunderbird Sports Roadster–style tonneau cover that can be fitted over the fold-down rear seat, giving the Mustang a distinctive two-seat roadster-inspired appearance.

Modern Supercharged GT500 Power

Under the hood sits a supercharged 5.4-liter V-8 sourced from a 2012 Shelby GT500, paired with a Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission. The drivetrain upgrades bring contemporary muscle-car performance to the vintage fastback platform.

The car rides on a heavily upgraded chassis, including Mustangs to Fear suspension components, a C6 front suspension setup, frame stiffeners, and a Watts-link rear suspension system. A Big Dog 9-inch rear axle with a 3.55 gear ratio helps transfer power to the pavement.

Stopping power comes from Wilwood six-piston brake calipers with large ventilated discs, complemented by a push-button electronic parking brake system.

Award-Winning Build

Since completion, the custom Mustang has earned major recognition across the show circuit.

The car scored an extraordinary 999 out of 1,000 points at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals (MCACN), earning the prestigious Diamond Award. It has also collected multiple show honors, including:

Chicagoland Mustang Club Best of Show

Best in Class at Suds and Fun 2025

First Place at Mustang Day

Best in Class at Ford Fall Fest 2025

The project has also been showcased publicly, appearing at the 2024 SEMA Show and featured on PowerNation TV’s “Under The Hood” program, along with several automotive publications.

Extensive Custom Details

Virtually every component of the car was addressed during the build. Highlights include custom stainless headers fabricated by Rada Race Lab, a hidden exhaust system, and one-off Forgeline wheels measuring 18×10 inches in front and 18×11 inches in the rear, wrapped in Nitto Invo performance tires.

The car retains the original steel roof spine, a hallmark of 1968 fastback construction, while the steel hood and rear bumper were modified for improved fit and styling. Additional exterior details include GT500KR side scoops, flush-mounted glass, sequential LED taillights, and a custom decklid design.

Inside, the custom theme continues with bolstered seats, a bespoke center console with Bluetooth connectivity, a Ring Brothers shifter, digital factory-style gauges, and a custom audio system. Power windows with billet handles replicate the look of traditional manual controls, maintaining a classic aesthetic despite modern upgrades.

With its blend of cutting-edge customization, high-performance hardware, and show-winning presentation, this 1968 Mustang Custom Fastback represents one of the most distinctive builds scheduled to appear at the Glendale 2026 auction.

Mecum Glendale will be selling over 2,000 collector vehicles at the State Farm Arena March 17-21. Visit their website to see all consignments and collections, buy tickets and register to bid onsite or online.
