A striking blend of vintage design, modern engineering, and custom craftsmanship is set to turn heads when the one-off 1962 Excalibur RS Roadster crosses the block at Mecum Indy on Friday, May 16.

Commissioned by collector Bob Shaw and designed by legendary industrial designer Brooks Stevens with assistance from fabricator Dave Draper, this singular creation was built with no compromises. The chassis was constructed by Chuck Rahn, while the sculpted hand-formed aluminum body rests on a steel tube space frame—underscoring its one-off showcar credentials.

Under the hood lies a 5.7-liter GM crate V8, equipped with Edelbrock throttle-body fuel injection, tubular headers, and custom valve covers. Power is sent through a GM 700R4 automatic transmission to a Halibrand quick-change rear axle. The vehicle rides on Borrani wire wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich tires, with stopping power provided by Wilwood disc brakes.

This Excalibur RS is more than a powerplant, however—it’s a statement. Its body is finished in Mercedes-Benz Mystic Blue Metallic and Pearl White, accented in Brilliant Red. The design cues borrow from both classic and exotic vehicles, with a GT40-inspired nose and Lamborghini Murciélago-style scissor doors, which add dramatic flair.

Inside, the red leather cabin features engine-turned aluminum panels, a removable steering wheel, and a polycarbonate windshield. Power-operated doors, hood, and decklid add to the custom experience, while control-arm front suspension and power rack-and-pinion steering bring modern road manners.

The RS Roadster gained national attention when it was featured on Jay Leno’s Garage, highlighting its status as a true one-off collector car with show-level execution.

Crossing the block as Lot R428 at Mecum’s 2025 Indy auction, the Excalibur RS offers bidders a chance to own a bespoke rolling sculpture that defies categorization—equal parts performance car, concept cruiser, and piece of automotive art.

This vehicle is selling at Dana Mecum’s 38th Original Spring Classic May 9-17. Watch the action in person or on ESPN+. With 3,000 classic and collectors vehicles for sale, there’s a great selection!
