A one-of-a-kind 1962 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster—believed to be the only example originally finished in Dunkelrot Metallic (DB 571)—is poised to captivate collectors and connoisseurs alike at the upcoming RM Sotheby’s Sealed Drop Sale.

1962 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster of the April 2025 “Sealed Drop” event, this extraordinary late-production SL is among the final 209 units to receive the highly coveted alloy engine block and disc brakes, enhancements that significantly elevated the 300 SL’s touring credentials. Chassis 003099 is believed to be one of just 100 surviving examples still retaining its original aluminum-block 198.982 engine—a feat of preservation rarely encountered in today’s collector market.

Initially delivered new to Swiss industrialist Josef Wernle, the Roadster remained in European hands for nearly six decades, with just three long-term custodians prior to its 2021 importation to the U.S. Under the meticulous care of respected German restorer Kienle Automobiltechnik, the car underwent a comprehensive restoration in the late 1990s. Finished in a classic DB 180 Silver-Grey Metallic over Roser red leather, the car’s cosmetic and mechanical refinements have been carefully maintained, including recent work by the Scott Grundfor Company.

Beyond its exceptional condition, the car is richly documented with a factory data card, Swiss title, TÜV reports, and maintenance history. Included are its factory hardtop, two-piece fitted luggage, tool roll, and manuals.

Presented with concours quality and irreplaceable provenance, this Roadster represents the pinnacle of 300 SL evolution. Its rarity, pedigree, and performance credentials establish it as a definitive centerpiece for any serious collector. This is more than a car—it’s a historical benchmark in Mercedes-Benz heritage.
