One-of-One Red-on-Red 1967 Corvette L88 Heads to Auction from Mecum

A truly rare piece of American automotive history is set to cross the block at Mecum’s Monterey 2025 auction: the only known Rally Red over red interior 1967 Chevrolet Corvette L88 Coupe. Scheduled to be auctioned Friday, August 15, this Corvette is expected to bring between $2.5 million and $3 million.

This 1967 example is one of only 20 L88-equipped Corvettes built for the model year and stands alone with its factory Rally Red exterior and matching red Code 305 interior—making it the only known L88 in this specification. With just 11,990 miles on the odometer, it remains in exceptional condition following a meticulous restoration by the renowned Naber brothers in Houston.

Under the hood is a factory-rated 427-cubic-inch V8 engine, officially listed at 430 horsepower but widely believed to produce far more. The L88 engine package was a no-nonsense racing setup with aluminum heads, high-lift camshaft, 12.5:1 compression, and an 850 CFM Holley carburetor. It’s paired to a heavy-duty Muncie M22 “Rock Crusher” four-speed manual transmission and backed by a correct tank sticker—rare documentation confirming factory authenticity.

Lacking creature comforts like a radio or heater, the L88 was strictly performance-focused, which, coupled with a $1,500 upcharge at the time (equivalent to over $14,000 today), resulted in limited production.

Beyond its rarity, this L88 has earned numerous accolades: Bloomington Gold certifications in 1994 and 2014, multiple NCRS Top Flight awards including a Duntov Mark of Excellence, and repeated inclusion in the prestigious Bloomington Gold Special Collection. It was also selected as a Chip’s Choice award winner at Corvettes at Carlisle.

Previously part of several high-profile collections—including those of Ray Norvell and the Rare Wheels Collection—this L88 now offers collectors a singular chance to acquire a fully documented and historically significant piece of Corvette heritage.
