A singular piece of RUF and Porsche history is heading to auction, offering collectors a rare opportunity to acquire the only RUF 928-based model ever assigned a genuine RUF VIN.
Built in 1989, the car—commonly referred to as the RUF 928S or 928R—stands apart from typical tuner-modified examples. Unlike standard Porsche 928 models upgraded with aftermarket components, this car was constructed by RUF from a body-in-white supplied directly for the project. It carries an authentic W09 VIN designation, confirming its status as a factory-built RUF rather than a modified Porsche.
The one-off grand tourer was commissioned by Lee Kun-hee, the longtime chairman of Samsung, who was known for assembling an extensive and diverse car collection. The vehicle became part of what is known as the Samsung Collection, which included rare road cars and race machines. Following Lee’s passing in 2020, select vehicles from the collection have entered the market.
Completed in September 1989, the car bears a plaque with Lee’s name, underscoring its bespoke origins. After his death, the 928 was reacquired by RUF, where it underwent a mechanical restoration along with further updates.

Power comes from a 5.0-liter V8 that received RUF’s performance enhancements. Output was increased from the standard 316 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque to 360 horsepower and 354 pound-feet. While modest by modern standards, those figures represented significant performance at the time. The car is equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission.
The interior features wine-red trim throughout, with RUF logos embossed on the headrests and Alcantara covering the steering wheel. Porsche badging is notably absent. A retro-style radio with modern internals blends classic aesthetics with updated functionality.
Additional upgrades include 19-inch wheels fitted to clear RUF carbon ceramic brakes and a revised exhaust system.
Gooding Christie’s has estimated the car will sell for between $400,000 and $500,000 at the upcoming Amelia Island auction, reflecting its singular status in RUF’s history.
