The automotive world was struck with a devastating loss as the iconic 1979 Ford Probe I concept car, an irreplaceable piece of automotive history, met its untimely end in a fiery incident while leaving the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The trailer transporting the car caught fire, completely destroying the vehicle and leaving enthusiasts mourning the loss of this unique piece of engineering.
The Ford Probe I, designed by Don F. Kopka in collaboration with Carrozzeria Ghia, was a significant example of advanced automotive design from the late 1970s. The vehicle was one of several Probe concepts created between 1970 and 1985, all of which were intended to showcase Ford’s cutting-edge aerodynamic advancements. The Probe I featured a sleek, wedge-shaped design aimed at optimizing fuel efficiency, and was based on the Fox-body Mustang platform. It was powered by a 2.3-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produced 170 horsepower—an impressive feat for its time.

The car had just been on display at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, where it participated in the Wedge-Shaped Concept Cars and Prototypes class, captivating attendees with its futuristic design and historical significance. The fire, which broke out just hours after the event, consumed both the trailer and the Probe I, leaving nothing but memories and photographs of this once-stunning vehicle. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
The Scott Grundfor Company, the current owner of the Probe I, expressed their profound sorrow in an Instagram post, likening the loss to losing a member of their family. They had been the proud stewards of this automotive masterpiece for over 20 years, having acquired it directly from Ford Motor Company. The company announced plans to return the remains of the car to their collection, where it will reside among other Ghia/Ford-bodied prototypes as a testament to its historical significance.
The Ford Probe I’s destruction serves as a stark reminder of the risks involved in transporting and showcasing such rare and valuable vehicles. While the car’s loss is a significant blow to the automotive community, it also underscores the importance of preserving automotive history and the memories associated with these extraordinary machines.
