A unique piece of automotive history is about to hit the auction block: a one-of-a-kind Lamborghini LM002 Wagon once owned by the Sultan of Brunei. This customized off-roader is set to be auctioned by SBX Cars on August 7, 2024, and is expected to fetch a substantial sum due to its rarity and royal provenance.
The Lamborghini LM002, first introduced in the 1980s, was Lamborghini’s bold foray into off-road vehicles. Often referred to as the “Rambo Lambo” due to its rugged design and military inspiration, it was a far cry from the luxury sports cars the Italian automaker is renowned for. Despite its initial military intentions, the LM002 gained fame among celebrities, including Sylvester Stallone.
In a twist of luxury and exclusivity, the Sultan of Brunei commissioned a bespoke conversion of his 1986 LM002. This unique build, crafted by the Italian coachbuilder Salvatore Diomante, transforms the truck-like LM002 into a wagon. Unlike standard models, this conversion involved closing the bed, raising the roofline, and fitting a U-shaped bench in the rear cabin. Originally black, the LM002 Wagon now sports a sophisticated Argento Metallizzato silver exterior and a luxurious Cuoio Nero leather interior. It features modern comforts such as air conditioning, power windows, a custom stereo system with DVD player, wood trim, and a sunroof.
Under the hood, the LM002 Wagon retains its 5.2-liter V12 engine, delivering 450 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque. Although the vehicle’s additional weight—about 1,000 pounds more than the standard model—may affect performance, it still boasts impressive acceleration and top speed for a vehicle of its kind.
With only a handful of LM002s converted into wagons and this being the sole factory-sanctioned example, the auction is poised to attract significant attention. The vehicle, which has been part of the Sultan’s extensive collection, is described as having 10,383 kilometers on the odometer and is listed in Lamborghini’s registry of historic cars.
The auction will include detailed service records and the original tires, which are still in use. As one of the rarest and most intriguing Lamborghinis ever made, the LM002 Wagon’s final selling price is expected to be a noteworthy figure.
