A heavily modified 1978 Pontiac Trans Am recently stunned muscle car enthusiasts and collectors alike by selling for $285,000 on Bring a Trailer, signaling a rising trend in high-end restomod values for the second-generation Firebird.

The black-and-gold coupe, visually reminiscent of the Smokey and the Bandit movie car, wasn’t just a pretty face. Beneath the iconic “screaming chicken” hood decal is a 6.2-liter LS3 V8, the same engine that powered later-model C6 Corvettes and the Pontiac G8 GXP. It’s paired with a Tremec 6-speed manual transmission, giving the classic Trans Am a thoroughly modern driving experience.
Mechanically, this Trans Am has been completely transformed. Enhancements include a limited-slip differential with 3.73:1 gearing, adjustable coilover front suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, long-tube headers, PRC aluminum heads, and a full Pypes dual exhaust. An Edelbrock throttle body and Holley fuel rails help the upgraded LS3 breathe and fuel properly, while a Texas Speed camshaft brings serious power to the table.
Inside, the car retains much of its original styling, but with key updates for comfort and usability. Period-style upholstery, aftermarket air conditioning, a digital stereo head unit disguised as vintage, and a Hurst shifter blend nostalgia with practicality. The original factory spec included the WS6 handling package, T-tops, and tilt steering.
Originally priced at just $8,519 new, this Trans Am’s hammer price equates to over $44,000 in 2025 dollars—until you factor in its meticulous build. After bidding surpassed $200,000, a heated three-way showdown drove the final figure to $285,000.
Though it’s rare to see second-gen Firebirds command six-figure prices, this example illustrates the growing appetite for expertly crafted restomods that preserve vintage looks while delivering modern performance.
