Restored 1958 Mercedes-Benz 190SL Roadster to Cross Saratoga Motorcar Auction Block

A 1958 Mercedes-Benz 190SL finished in black with a tan interior is set to highlight the upcoming Saratoga Motorcar Auction, offering collectors a chance to own one of Mercedes’ most celebrated roadsters of the 1950s.

The 190SL, short for “Sport Light,” was built on a shortened version of Mercedes’ W120 sedan platform and paired elegant design with engineering sophistication. Debuting in 1954 and entering production in 1955, it was marketed as a more accessible sibling to the 300SL, carrying a price of $3,840 new. Over the model’s production run until 1963, 25,881 examples were built, with North America serving as its primary market.

This 1958 example, chassis number 7501628, shows 71,400 miles at cataloging and retains its original 1.9-liter inline-four, producing 120 horsepower through a four-speed manual transmission. The car benefits from rebuilt carburetors and ignition, a realigned hood, and a new battery, ensuring it remains roadworthy while maintaining its period charm. A set of LED headlights provides modern nighttime visibility, though all original components remain with the vehicle.

Finished in a striking black exterior with a Haartz cloth top over a camel tan leather interior, the 190SL blends understated elegance with sports car appeal. Inside, it features a period-correct radio, reflecting its factory specifications while offering subtle updates for reliability.

The 190SL was never designed to rival its 300SL sibling in raw performance, but it carved its own niche as a touring roadster prized for its balance of style and drivability. Collectors today value well-maintained examples for their usability and enduring design.

This offering represents an opportunity to acquire a documented and carefully preserved piece of Mercedes-Benz history, a roadster as fit for the concours lawn as it is for weekend drives.

The Saratoga Auto Auction takes place September 19-20. TWe anticipate more than 250 vehicles, several with no reserve and 100 lots of memorabilia. The auction is the highlight of several events including Thursday’s Preview Day and an evening concert. Plan a trip or register to bid online.
