While the world watches Waymo and Tesla dominate the robotaxi headlines, Rimac, based in Croatia, has unveiled its own groundbreaking concept. Dubbed “Verne” after the visionary author Jules Verne, this robotaxi is designed to revolutionize urban transportation. The Verne concept emphasizes a holistic approach to mobility, combining advanced autonomous driving technology, a user-friendly app, and a specialized infrastructure to deliver an unparalleled travel experience.
The Verne Robotaxi, developed by Rimac’s team, features a compact three-door design suitable for one or two passengers. Unlike the minibus-style vehicles seen in other robotaxi announcements, Verne’s sleek, futuristic design offers a personalized and comfortable ride. The vehicle is built on a platform designed exclusively for autonomous driving, eliminating the compromises seen in adapted human-driven vehicles. Rimac employs technology from Mobileye, including three long-distance lidar sensors, six short-distance sensors, and thirteen cameras, to ensure safe and reliable navigation in any weather conditions.
Powered by a 150 kW electric motor and a 60 kWh LFP battery, the Verne Robotaxi boasts a range of 240 kilometers (approximately 125 miles), ideal for urban use. This efficient design makes the Verne both cost-effective to produce and operate. The central feature of the Verne’s infrastructure is the “mothership” hub, where vehicles go daily for battery charging and cleaning. Designed with quick maintenance in mind, the Verne allows for easy replacement of damaged or dirty interior components, ensuring a clean and comfortable experience for each passenger.
Inside the Verne, simplicity and personalization are key. A large central touchscreen allows passengers to control settings such as ambient lighting, interior temperature, and even scents, making each ride tailored to the user’s preferences. Notably, the Verne operates without a human backup driver, featuring no pedals or steering wheel, emphasizing its commitment to full autonomy.
The Verne Robotaxi is set to launch in 2026, starting in Zagreb, with plans to expand to the UK, Germany, and other European cities before eventually reaching the Middle East. Production will take place in a new facility in Zagreb. The project is led by Marko Pejkovic, alongside Mate Rimac and Chief Design Officer Adriano Mudri.
