There’s little doubt Dubai is a mover and shaker in the global community, including when it comes to car collecting. Recognizing the untapped potential, auction house RM Sotheby’s held its first-ever event in the United Arab Emirates city over the weekend, with sales surpassing $10,000,000.

Antique Mercedes-Simplex auctions for a lofty price.

Three rare hypercars were responsible for the lions share of that total. One was a 2016 Koenigsegg Agera RSR, one of only made in the world, which auctioned for $3,380,000. That result was at the upper limit of the range RM Sotheby’s estimated for the top bid.

Also bringing in a monstrous high bid, which was entirely expected, was the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss. A dramatic hypercar providing a true open-air driving experience, with a mere 75 examples made, bidding drove the final price to $3,211,250. That was almost exactly in the middle of the high bid range estimated by RM Sotheby’s.

The third hypercar to drive big numbers was a 2023 Aston Martin Valkyrie which captured $3,070,625 while on the block. About as close as a road-legal car can get to an F1 racecar, many want to get behind the wheel of one. That amount was also within the auction house’s estimated range for the top bid.

Also impressive was the sale of a 2017 Lamborghini Centenario LP770-4 Coupe for $2,142,500. With only 20 of these special vehicles created to celebrate Ferrucio Lamborghini’s centenary year and a mere 112 km on the odometer, it more than qualifies as a modern collectable.

With such a tremendous response to the inaugural event, we would expect a Dubai auction to become a staple for RM Sotheby’s in the future.
