Built by Porsche KG in 1969 to meet FIA homologation standards, 917-022 was converted to short-tail configuration by the factory in 1970. Purchased directly from Porsche by McQueen’s Solar Productions, the car was specially outfitted with camera mounts to capture high-speed race footage for Le Mans. Many of these original modifications remain intact, preserving its unique role in motorsport and film history.
This Porsche has a storied ownership timeline, including stewardship by racing luminaries such as Reinhold Joest, Brian Redman, and Richard Attwood, before entering the collection of comedian and Porsche enthusiast Jerry Seinfeld in 2001. Beyond its Hollywood fame, 917-022 has an impressive racing pedigree. Post-filming, it was campaigned by Team Auto Usdau during the 1971 season, driven by legends like Jo Siffert and Willi Kauhsen. Later, Richard Attwood transformed its livery to honor Porsche’s first Le Mans win but eventually reverted it to its Gulf colors.
