One of the most coveted air-cooled Porsches ever built is set to cross the auction block at Mecum’s Glendale auction on March 22, 2025. A 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Lightweight, one of only 200 produced in the M471 configuration, is expected to draw significant interest from collectors and enthusiasts alike.

With an odometer reading of just 15,930 kilometers (9,874 miles), this exceptionally well-preserved example represents the pinnacle of Porsche’s 1970s motorsport engineering. Developed for FIA homologation, the Carrera RS 2.7 emerged as a lightweight, high-performance evolution of the 911, featuring thinner-gauge steel panels, fiberglass bumpers, lightweight Glaverbel safety glass, and racing-inspired bucket seats.

At the heart of this iconic machine is a Type 911/83 2.7-liter air-cooled flat-six engine producing 210 horsepower, paired with Bosch mechanical fuel injection and a Type 915 five-speed manual transmission. The engine and gearbox numbers—6630573 and 7830552, respectively—confirm its authenticity. To enhance handling, Porsche widened the rear track, incorporated ventilated four-wheel disc brakes, and introduced the now-legendary “Burzel” ducktail rear spoiler to reduce lift at high speeds.

According to the Porsche Registry, this example was originally delivered to Italy before spending time in Switzerland and eventually making its way to the United States. The car is presented in its striking Tangerine exterior over a black lightweight interior, complemented by silver Fuchs wheels. It retains its original tool kit and jack, with accompanying restoration photos documenting its journey.

Given the Carrera RS 2.7’s storied history and limited production, demand for these models continues to soar. As one of the rarest and most celebrated Porsche 911s ever produced, this Lightweight-spec example stands as a prime collectible, poised to command a premium at auction.
