A truly extraordinary Ferrari F40, often referred to as the “Minty Forty,” is set to steal the spotlight at an upcoming auction during Monterey Car Week. This one-of-a-kind supercar, expected to sell for between $1.9 million and $2.5 million, is not only distinguished by its striking mint green exterior but also by its fascinating history and impeccable condition.
Chassis number 88538 started its life in a more traditional Ferrari fashion, originally delivered in the iconic Rosso Corsa red to its first owner in Germany. Over the years, the car changed hands several times, including ownership by the then-president of the German Ferrari Club. However, it was in 2021 when the car’s current owner decided to make it truly unique by transforming it into the “Minty Forty.”
The inspiration for the car’s mint green hue comes from a legendary Ferrari 250 GTO (chassis 3505 GT) that was famously built for racing icon Stirling Moss. This color choice alone sets this F40 apart from the rest, as all F40s originally left the Maranello factory in red. The bold decision to repaint the car in this pale green shade has made it an instant sensation among Ferrari enthusiasts.
Inside, the F40 has been reimagined with a bespoke blue interior, expertly crafted by a specialist known more for his work on aircraft than automobiles. The result is a cohesive and striking look that complements the car’s exterior while paying homage to its racing roots.
Beyond its unique aesthetics, the “Minty Forty” retains its numbers-matching engine and gearbox, a crucial factor for collectors. This F40 is no garage queen either—it has been meticulously maintained and driven, with just over 19,000 miles on the clock. Recent maintenance, including a major service and fuel tank replacement, has ensured that this supercar is as mechanically sound as it is visually stunning.
Adding to its allure, Ferrari itself recognized the car’s uniqueness by licensing Amalgam to produce 1:8 and 1:18 scale models of the “Minty Forty,” further solidifying its place in automotive history.
As the final hammer falls at RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction, the new owner of this extraordinary Ferrari F40 will not only acquire a piece of automotive art but also a vehicle with a story as colorful as its paintwork.
